music made with bees

I wanted to see how far I could take the recordings of bees into the realm of music. The bee produces about 200-230 wing flaps pr. second, which is enough to generate a nice, rich sounding buzz. I recorded a bunch of bee sounds and manipulated them through a variety of tools (including timefreezers, delays, filters, glitch modules etc). I then decided to add some more human elements to it (vocals, guitars, grooves etc) and wrapped it up by adding full symphony orchestra and choirs on it during the end.

Besides the bee sounds – the majority of samples are coming from the tonehammer.com sample catalog.

Hope you enjoy it. Einstein once predicted that the human race would survive no more then 4 years after the extinction of bees due to their keystone role in the entire ecosystem. So peace out to all the bees and bumbles.

the sounds of star wars

not really a star wars fan, but this looks amazing. the same guy, ben burtt, also did the sound design for indiana jones.

Written with New York Times best-selling author J. W. Rinzler, Sounds tells the intimate details behind your favorite Star Wars sound effects. From the majestic hum of a lightsaber to the lowly chitter of a Jawa, every effect has a story. This lavishly illustrated tome is more than just a book, it includes a sound module that lets you listen to over 250 original sounds from the Star Wars series in high-quality stereo as you read along.

A Book About Sound
It is hard to imagine how one would encapsulate the vast world of sound into the written word. Burtt found that merely writing about sound wasn’t enough; the reader needed to hear the audio in context with the stories. Modern technology now makes it possible to include the sound files in the sound module attached to the book. Over 300 photographs illustrate scenes from the films and show Burtt with his team recording audio in the field or sculpting the sounds back in the studio. Each of the sound effects described may be listened to with either the built-in speaker or a stereo headphone jack.  -  tony rowe

seven percent growth

Video projected in a loop at Almaz.I used a lot of stop-motion footage, just wandering in hanoian streets, meeting with the workers. It seemed like wherever you’d go in the city, you’d meet working people, from the small crew fixing a metal gate to the whole company working on a building. And don’t forget the trucks and cranes digging the deepest dirt from the red river, taking all this soil to a mysterious destination.
How is it to walk through a city whose country had an average seven percent growth of economy for the last decade ?

It took me a few nights walking or driving around to get the footage. Isaak Le recorded some sound, edited the video with me, and mixed the sound.
