all right, so what i really wanted this thing to be was a cheap lemur that also ran a computer OS with computer applications. can’t be disappointed that ‘multitouch controller’ wasn’t at the top of apple’s list. fair play. but using the iphone OS seems to me as worthy of the old whiskey tango foxtrot as giving the thing a name that evokes feminine hygiene products. the ipad is not a computer, it’s a personal media player. it’s the ipod touch optimized for reading newspapers and craptimized for portability. this isn’t the ‘third device’ between phones and computers. for my money, the third device is less about media consumption and more about media creation. i think that’s why so many people got frothy about that fantastic dual-screen unicorn, the courier. it showed the promise of a legitimately new and interesting way to use a computer as a creative tool.
